Proverb 4:23
“Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
Quite literally everything we think and do springs from our heart. Every single day we have a decision to make. We can either allow good or allow evil to flow from us and out into the world and those around us. As Haim Ginott, an educational psychologist, put it, we get to be either tools of torture or instruments of inspiration. God’s law and Scripture/Word are inscribed on our hearts, so when this verse tells us to guard our hearts, it is truly saying we need to protect the truth and knowledge He has inscribed in us. We need to be the good in the world and not the evil. We need to intentionally be sure the things coming from us are love, peace, joy, kindness, patience, goodness, faithfulness, and self control.
What we spend time focusing on and filling our time with becomes the things we care about most and fills our hearts with most. It is also what pours out of us most. Are you filling your time with the Word? Are you filling your time with the world? Are you focusing your time on yourself? Are you focusing your life on serving others?
How can you fill your heart with something good this week?
How can you be an instrument of inspiration in someone’s life this week?
